The benefits of a good night sleep.
Sleep. We all do it, but what exactly is its purpose? Scientists used to think that sleep was just a time when the body shut down and did nothing. But now we know that sleep is actually incredibly important for our physical and mental health. Here are some of the ways that sleep can benefit you:
1) Sleep deprivation negatively affects your mood, memory, and ability to think clearly.
2) Lack of sleep increases your risk of getting sick and decreases your immune system’s ability to fight infection.
3) Poor quality or insufficient sleep leads to obesity, heart disease, and diabetes.
4) Sleeping more than nine hours a day has been linked with an increased risk of death from all causes.
I’m not a morning person. Morning people are those annoyingly cheerful souls that bound out of bed at the crack of dawn, radiating positivity and well-restedness. Not me. I need at least an hour to properly wake up, and usually spend that time slowly sipping coffee and reading the news. Which is why I was surprised to learn about all the benefits of sleep – something I had always thought was just laziness disguised as restfulness. Turns out, there’s a lot more to it than that!
